Network Function Virtualization, or NFV, was developed to overcome the issues of traditional hardware appliances by delivering functionality via software running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware.
NFV promised to address increasing capital expenses while providing automation, faster deployment and simplified management. Unfortunately these promises have largely gone unrealized. Operators are seeing little benefit to deploying NFV solutions in their environments.
Timetables for NFV implementations continue to be pushed every quarter and projected completion dates grow more distant.
According to Heavy Reading, in November 2016, 45% of organizations said their entire virtualization project would be complete by 2020. In April 2017, that percentage slipped to 38%. The percentage of organizations that expected their NFV implementation to be complete by 2023 also slipped from 25% to 30%.
The clear learning from NVF is that wrapping layers of software around a traditional hardware appliance architecture is not delivering the results today’s cloud service providers need.
Providers need an approach that re-imagines network functions so they can streamline operations, reduce financial risk and deliver on customer demands.
